Oregon Racist Prison Gang Member Guilty of Murder

  • October 26, 2009

A member of an Oregon racist prison gang has pleaded guilty to a 2007 murder in Wasco County.

The Wasco County District Attorney's office announced that in late September 2009, James Paulk Jr., 31, pleaded guilty to murder.  A Wasco County Grand Jury indicted Paulk for the murder in October 2008.

In accordance with the plea, Paulk will receive a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole in 25 years.  Because Paulk is already serving a sentence from Washington State, the parole eligibility will be delayed until he serves 31 years.

Paulk and his victim, Christopher Bailey, were both members of the violent racist prison gang European Kindred (EK) .

On June 28, 2007, Paulk, Bailey, and Bailey's girlfriend (who testified against Paulk at his bail hearing) went out drinking at a bar.  During the drive home Paulk pulled out a handgun and shot Bailey numerous times. According to the victim's girlfriend, she and Paulk then did methamphetamine and drove to Paulk's father's home and asked for a shovel.  When his father refused, Paulk continued to drive around with Bailey's dead body in his car for the next week.

About a week later, according to the testimony of Christie Borton, Borton drove with Paulk into Washington State, where they dropped the body off a cliff and into a ravine.

After leaving the body, Paulk carjacked a vehicle, robbing, shooting and wounding the owner, and stealing the car.

Paulk has since pleaded guilty in Washington to robbery in the first degree, assault in the second degree with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and malicious mischief in the first degree for the carjacking incident, and is currently incarcerated for these charges.

The European Kindred is a large, violent white supremacist gang based primarily in Oregon that has been active in the prison system since 1998 and increasingly on the streets as well, especially in the Portland area.  As much an organized crime group as a hate group, European Kindred members have engaged in illegal activities ranging from drug trafficking to home invasions.
