Read ADL's comprehensive report, The Web of Hate: Extremists Exploit the Internet. (PDF)
In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, the ADL is making available select reports from 1994-1997, the era when the Oklahoma City bombing occurred.
This report describes circumstances in the mid-1990s, not the present day.
The Web of Hate, published in 1996, was one of the first investigations into how extremist groups had begun to exploit the newly accessible technologies of the Internet and the World Wide Web as vehicles for spreading extremist propaganda.
Used by all types of right-wing extremists, the Internet’s ease of access created opportunities for previously unknown haters and hate groups to promote themselves and become active racist propagandists with access to a potentially worldwide audience. With extremists embracing the new technology of the Internet, questions were now emerging involving freedom of speech and press, as well as the responsibility of Internet providers when it came to extremist content online.
