Letter to President Correa

His Excellency Rafael Correa

President of the Republic of Ecuador
Garcia Moreno N10-43 entre Chile y Espejo
170401/ Quito - Ecuador

Dear Mr. President:

We are writing to express our great concern over recent reports of a  posting on your Twitter account with “¡Heil Hitler!” in responding to a tweet from @WKybalion regarding a comment made by former President Osvaldo Hurtado about you at the Summit of the Americas.

Regardless of President Hurtado’s comment, as the President of Ecuador, we respectfully urge you – as we have urged other public figures – to refrain from using offensive Hitler and Nazi references.

Using the Third Reich salutation and cheer “Heil Hitler” in a cavalier manner is never acceptable. It is an insult to the memory of the millions who perished at the hands of the Nazis, to the survivors, and to the brave men and women who fought to save them from extermination and to defeat the Nazis in World War II.

With over one hundred years of working to counteract anti-Semitism and all forms of prejudice, bigotry and hatred, the Anti-Defamation League has learned that public officials can have a significant impact on society. Respectfully, as the head of state in Ecuador, we hope you will refrain from using such offensive comments and make clear they have no place in multicultural and pluralistic Ecuadorian society.

We look forward to hearing from you on this important matter.

Sincerely,

Abraham H. Foxman
National Director
