Dear Mr. Vizer,

We wish to commend the International Judo Federation for taking appropriate and principled disciplinary action against the UAE and Tunisia for their nationality-based discriminatory practices which make it impossible for athletes from Israel to fully participate in tournaments in their countries.

As you may recall, I wrote to you in October of last year following the UAE’s decision to ban all Israeli symbols, including the Israeli flag and playing of the Israeli national anthem, during the Judo Grand Slam competition in Abu Dhabi, calling on you to ensure that host countries treat Israel equally and fairly or risk penalties.

We are greatly appreciative of your actions on this matter. As you know, the politicization of sporting events has unfortunately become an all too frequent occurrence for Israeli athletes. I hope IJF’s action sends the message that IJF will not tolerate discrimination of any kind in the sport, and also serves as a model for other sporting associations to ensure that such discrimination are similarly properly addressed.

Sincerely,
