New York, NY, October 6, 2011 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today called on the Palestinian Authority leadership to condemn the desecration of Joseph's Tomb in Nablus, to commit to apprehending and prosecuting the perpetrators, and to publicly make clear that this type of unacceptable behavior has no place in Palestinian society. Israeli soldiers discovered swastikas spray painted on the exterior walls of the shrine, which Jews believe to be the tomb of the biblical figure Joseph.
"We call on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and other Palestinian leaders to speak out loudly and clearly to condemn the daubing of swastikas on a site sacred to Jews," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "Just this week, Israeli political, religious and social leaders roundly expressed outrage and condemnation at the heinous desecration of a mosque in northern Israel. We expect Palestinian political, religious and social leaders to do no less."
Mr. Foxman added, "It is important that the Palestinian leadership make clear that they will seriously investigate this incident and hold the perpetrators accountable. They must also make clear that these types of actions are unacceptable, and have no place in Palestinian society."
