ADL Condemns Anti-Semitic Comments by U.K. Labour Parliamentarian

Tells Party Leader: Now is Your Chance to Condemn Anti-Semitism

New York, NY, October 29, 2015 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today condemned anti-Semitic comments by Gerald Kaufman, a Labour Member of Parliament in the U.K., who accused Jews of undue influence over the Conservative party and Israel of fabricating terror attacks as excuses to kill Palestinians.

Speaking at a pro-Palestinian event on October 27, Kaufman said, “It’s Jewish money, Jewish donations to the Conservative Party – as in the general election in May – support from The Jewish Chronicle, all of those things, bias the Conservatives.”

ADL called on Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the Labour party who recently committed to combatting anti-Semitism, to take action in the wake of the Kaufman’s remarks.

“Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn should condemn Gerald Kaufman’s rhetoric and take disciplinary action,” said Jonathan A. Greenblatt, ADL CEO. “Corbyn pledged a month ago to stand up against anti-Semitism.  Now is his chance.

“The anti-Semitic tropes about Jews and money and insidious Jewish influence of politicians go back many centuries,” Mr. Greenblatt added. “Our polling on anti-Semitic stereotypes shows Britain as having relatively few people who hold such stereotypes, but Kaufman is clearly one of them. Nor is this the first time he has made anti-Semitic remarks. His accusation that Israel is ‘fabricating’ most of the stories about Palestinians stabbing Israelis insults the victims of this wave of terrorism, and demonstrates all the more his propensity for conspiracy theories.”

A recent ADL poll found that 12 percent of those surveyed in the U.K. harbor anti-Semitic attitudes, compared to 24 percent in Western Europe.

ADL is the world’s leading anti-hate organization. Founded in 1913 in response to an escalating climate of anti-Semitism and bigotry, its timeless mission is to protect the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment for all. Today, ADL continues to fight all forms of hate with the same vigor and passion. A global leader in exposing extremism, delivering anti-bias education, and fighting hate online, ADL is the first call when acts of anti-Semitism occur. ADL’s ultimate goal is a world in which no group or individual suffers from bias, discrimination or hate.
