ADL Condemns Bias-Motivated Attack Against Muslim Woman

Cleveland, OH, December 22, 2010 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) condemns the recent bias-motivated attack against a Muslim woman outside the Abubakar Siddique Islamic Center in Columbus,Ohio.

On December 20, a man allegedly followed a woman into the parking lot of the Abubakar Siddique Islamic Center, sprayed her in the face with pepper spray, and said, "All you Muslims, go back to wherever you're from. Don't think you can rule this country." According to reports, the attacker also threatened to kill her.

"Anti-Muslim bigotry is unacceptable and un-American. Hate crimes such as this carry a clear, calculated and hateful message and should receive a priority response from both local and federal law enforcement agencies," said Nina Sundell, ADL Ohio/Kentucky/Allegheny Regional Director.

"Hate crimes send a message to both the victims and the victim's community that they are unsafe and unwelcome. When these incidents occur in our communities we must send an opposing message that all people, regardless of their religious or ethnic background, are safe, welcome and protected."
