ADL Condemns Desecration of Joseph's Tomb; Calls on Palestinian Authority to Denounce Acts

Jerusalem, January 24, 2013 ... The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today condemned the reported desecration of Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus, and reiterated its call for the Palestinian Authority to condemn these types of actions, apprehend and prosecute those responsible, and publicly make clear that vandalism of religious sites has no place in Palestinian society.

According to reports, Jewish pilgrims visiting the site found that vandals had urinated along the entrance way to the tomb. There were also indications of attempts to light the building on fire.

ADL’s Israel Office issued the following statement:

It appears that once again the Palestinian Authority has failed to properly protect Joseph’s Tomb, a site sacred to both Jews and Muslims, from desecration by vandals.

It is imperative that Palestinian leadership unequivocally denounce this reprehensible act, commit to seriously investigating the incident and bring to justice those responsible.

Palestinian leaders and security forces must also take steps to ensure these actions do not reoccur, and publicly make it clear that vandalism of religious sites has no place in Palestinian society.

The Anti-Defamation League was founded in 1913 to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all. Today it is the world’s leading organization combating anti-Semitism, exposing hate groups, training law enforcement on hate crimes, developing anti-bias education programs for students, countering cyber-hate and relentlessly pursuing equal rights for all.
