New York, NY, February 14, 2013 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today strongly condemned the vandalism of a historic Muslim cemetery in central Jerusalem, in what appears to be the latest in a series of outrageous so-called “Price-Tag” acts carried out by Jewish extremists. It is the 21st religious site targeted by price-tag-affiliated vandals in the past three years, according to public reports.
Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:
We deplore the desecration of the historic Muslim Mamila cemetery in the heart of Jerusalem. This latest act of hatred and hostility must be denounced by Israel’s religious and political leaders.
These blatant acts of prejudice by a small extremist segment of Israeli Jews do not represent the sentiments of the vast majority of Israelis. While condemnations from political leaders of these actions by extremist Jews have been prompt and clear, and law enforcement officials have acted to identify and prosecute the perpetrators, we encourage all Israelis to do more to reinforce the democratic values of respect for Israel’s Muslim minority and their religious sites.
According to news reports, Stars of David and the phrases “Price-Tag”, “Death to the Arabs” and “Ma’aleh Rehavam” were found spray-painted on Muslim tombstones in the Mamila cemetery. Ma’aleh Rehavam is a reference to a West Bank settlement where a number of illegally built Jewish homes are slated to be taken down by the Israeli government.
The Mamila price-tag attack is consistent with previous incidents involving the vandalism of religious sites by extremist Israeli Jews protesting Israeli government policies toward illegal Jewish settlement building.
