ADL Criticizes International “Rush to Judgment” Regarding Disputed Shootings Near Ramallah

New York, NY, May 20, 2014 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today criticized the “rush to judgment” by the United Nations and others in the international community calling for unwarranted levels of investigation of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) relating to the shooting deaths of two Palestinian youths at the scene of violent attacks against Israeli soldiers on May 15.

Immediately following the incident, Israeli military prosecutors commenced an investigation into the incident, and reached a preliminary conclusion that Israeli soldiers had not used live ammunition at any time during the violence against them. The IDF further stated that its investigation is ongoing.

“The public comments on this incident by the U.N. and others are inappropriate and unwarranted and represent a de-facto rush to judgment by suggesting the possibility of Israeli wrongdoing and the inadequacy of Israeli military protocols and procedures to conduct a thorough investigation,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. “It is well known that IDF rules of engagement and procedures to investigate breaches of those rules are among the most stringent in the world.”

The outpouring of calls for a broader, independent investigation came after video footage was widely circulated showing unarmed youth falling to the ground after gun fire in the area where the violent protest had occurred. The youths were killed in disputed circumstances during “Nakba Day” demonstrations outside the Ofer Military Prison near Ramallah, which were categorized by the IDF as a “violent riot.”

“The international community must respect the IDF’s right and responsibility to fully investigate this incident, and should refrain from rashly calling for extraordinary action before all the facts have been examined,” Mr. Foxman said.

The Anti-Defamation League was founded in 1913 to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all. Today it is the world’s leading organization combating anti-Semitism, exposing hate groups, training law enforcement on hate crimes, developing anti-bias education programs for students, countering cyber-hate and relentlessly pursuing equal rights for all.
