ADL Expresses Solidarity with the People of Israel During Ongoing Wave of Palestinian Violence

Condemns Vigilante Acts

Jerusalem, October 20, 2015 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today expressed solidarity with the people of Israel who are in the midst of a wave of Palestinian terror campaign in Jerusalem, the West Bank and other cities across the country, and condemned vigilante acts that have taken place in the wake of several incidents.

“We strongly stand behind the people of Israel during this ongoing wave of terrorism, including a number of stabbings targeting Israeli civilians and security personnel,” said Carole Nuriel, Acting Director of ADL’s Israel Office. “We deplore the terror attack in the Beersheva bus station which killed IDF soldier Omri Levi and injured of a number of others, and are saddened by the tragic shooting of Habtom Zarhum, an Eritrean man who shot by security personnel after being mistakenly identified as a terrorist.”

After being shot, Zarhum was physically and verbally attacked by a group of Israelis.

“We appreciate the very real physical insecurity Israelis are feeling. However, as declared by Prime Minister Netanyahu, vigilante acts – particularly as they can lead to tragedies such as these – have no place in Israel’s democratic, law-based society,” Ms. Nuriel said. “It is important that Israeli security forces are opening an investigation into this incident.”

ADL is the world’s leading anti-hate organization. Founded in 1913 in response to an escalating climate of antisemitism and bigotry, its timeless mission is to protect the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment for all. Today, ADL continues to fight all forms of hate with the same vigor and passion. A global leader in exposing extremism, delivering anti-bias education, and fighting hate online, ADL is the first call when acts of antisemitism occur. ADL’s ultimate goal is a world in which no group or individual suffers from bias, discrimination or hate.
