ADL Praises Germany’s Largest Party For Clear Linkage Between BDS and Anti-Semitism

New York, NY, December 8, 2016...The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today welcomed the strong statement by German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union party that the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement is “nothing other than coarse anti-Semitism.”

According to reports, the party adopted a resolution on December 7 which stated, “Who today under the flag of the BDS movement calls to boycott Israeli goods and services speaks the same language in which people were called to not buy from Jews. That is nothing other than coarse anti-Semitism.”

“It is highly significant that Germany’s largest party and the moral authority of modern Germany have made clear the fundamental linkage between BDS and anti-Semitism,” said Jonathan A. Greenblatt, ADL CEO. “At a time when efforts to isolate and delegitimize Israel are on the rise, it’s critical for society’s leaders to take a stand and call it out.”

Earlier this year, ADL forged a joint initiative with the Israeli-based Reut Institute to help Jewish communities and the State of Israel face the challenges that BDS poses, and is actively tackling various efforts to delegitimize Israel, including working on a local level, monitoring anti-Israel groups, educating and empowering students and fostering strong US-Israel relations.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.

The Anti-Defamation League was founded in 1913 to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all. Today it is the world’s leading organization combating anti-Semitism, exposing hate groups, training law enforcement on hate crimes, developing anti-bias education programs for students, countering cyber-hate and relentlessly pursuing equal rights for all.
