ADL Praises Netanyahu’s ‘Rational and Emotional’ Appeal to Maintain Iran Sanctions

New York, NY, October 1, 2013 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today congratulated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his important speech to the United Nations General Assembly in which he issued a powerful appeal to the international community to maintain a strong sanctions regime against Iran while it is testing a diplomatic approach.

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

Prime Minister Netanyahu has disappointed his critics who warned him not to be negative or shrill. He did not reject diplomacy, but in an articulate, reasonable, rational and emotional way made clear why the international community cannot afford to be complacent about Iran’s ongoing nuclear weapons program.

Mr. Netanyahu called on the international community to maintain tough sanctions until Iran has taken four concrete steps to fully dismantle its nuclear weapons program and facilities and disable its ability to move forward to full capability at a time of its choosing.  In responding to Iran President Hassan Rouhani’s so-called “charm offensive,” Mr. Netanyahu appealed to the international body to “distrust, dismantle and verify,” and warned that diplomacy can only succeed if pressure -- in the form of sanctions and a credible military threat -- is maintained.

He reminded the world that Israel will not permit Iran to become nuclear, and will oppose it even if it has to do so alone.

While eloquently laying out what security and survival mean to the Jewish state, importantly, the Israeli prime minister also reached out his hand to the Arab world and pledged to continue to work for a historic reconciliation with the Palestinians.
