ADL: Price Tag Attacks in Israel “Have Been Going on for Too Long”

Jerusalem, June 18, 2013 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today said it continues to be shocked and outraged by the ongoing campaign of “price tag” attacks, the latest of which was carried out in Abu Ghosh, an Arab village just outside of Jerusalem.

In the incident, there was widespread slashing of tires and graffiti reading “Arabs out.”

“We join Israel’s leadership in strongly condemning this heinous attack in Abu Ghosh, which is contrary to Jewish values and democratic ideals,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, who is currently in Israel.  “These attacks have been going on for too long.  While there is a special police unit tasked with cracking down on those committing price tag assaults, there has been minimal success in apprehending and prosecuting the perpetrators.  We are, however, encouraged that the Security Cabinet has approved labeling ‘Price Tag’ perpetrators as members of ‘illicit organizations,’ which would enhance the tools available to law enforcement and the judicial system.”

“Price Tag” is the name given by extremist Israeli settlers to attacks carried out in reprisal for Israeli government action against illegal settlement activity.  Such attacks - including the targeting of mosques, churches, Arab homes and property, Israeli military bases and vehicles, as well as other settlers - have increased in past years. They involve the desecration of property with anti-Arab and anti-government slogans including the phrase “price tag,” often accompanied by hateful and racist slogans, the name of an illegal settlement, or a reference to an Israeli casualty of Palestinian terrorism.

The Anti-Defamation League was founded in 1913 to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all. Today it is the world’s leading organization combating anti-Semitism, exposing hate groups, training law enforcement on hate crimes, developing anti-bias education programs for students, countering cyber-hate and relentlessly pursuing equal rights for all.
