ADL Strongly Condemns Terror Attacks In Southern Israel

New York, NY, August 18, 2011 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today expressed horror and outrage at the coordinated terrorist attacks in southern Israel which killed at least 7 Israelis and wounded dozens more. At least three attacks occurred near the Israeli city of Eilat, including a shooting attack on a public bus followed by explosive devices aimed at Israeli soldiers and civilian vehicles, which were reportedly launched from across the border in Egypt.

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

We are horrified and outraged by today's terrorist attacks which are believed to have been perpetrated by terrorists based in Gaza, who reportedly mounted the attacks from Egypt. These deadly incidents make clear that Hamas-led Gaza continues to target Israel and Israeli civilians.

The especially troubling new element in this attack is that the perpetrators apparently exploited the reduced presence and attention of Egyptian security forces in the Sinai region to gain access to Israel.

This development highlights the new security dynamic confronting Israel in a changing Middle East. Israel has no choice but to once again respond to wanton terror attacks on its soil in order to protect Israeli civilians and deter terrorists.

The Anti-Defamation League was founded in 1913 to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all. Today it is the world’s leading organization combating anti-Semitism, exposing hate groups, training law enforcement on hate crimes, developing anti-bias education programs for students, countering cyber-hate and relentlessly pursuing equal rights for all.
