ADL: Time to Restore the Court to Full Capacity and Ensure That Justice Is Not Delayed

New York, NY, March 17, 2016 … Following the nomination by President Obama of Merrick Garland to the U.S. Supreme Court, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) urged the Senate to fulfill its constitutional duty and ensure that justice is not delayed.

Marvin D. Nathan, ADL National Chair, and Jonathan A. Greenblatt, ADL CEO, issued the following statement:

We urge the Senate to fulfill its constitutional duty: to provide ‘advice and consent’ on President Obama’s nominee without delay. There is more than enough time for the Senate to conduct an orderly nomination and confirmation process before the end of President Obama’s time in office. Leaving the seat vacant impairs the Supreme Court’s ability to do its job effectively.

We congratulate Judge Garland on his nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. He has already served our country with distinction in a number of high level capacities. As the grandson of immigrants who fled anti-Semitism in Russia, Judge Garland has lived the American Dream, achieving remarkable professional success. As a federal judge for 18 years and an attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice, for decades Judge Garland has devoted his life to public service.

We urge senators to fulfill their constitutional duty – to review Judge Garland’s record and qualifications thoroughly and to take an up or down vote on the President’s nominee.

As this process moves forward, ADL will share with members of the Senate Judiciary Committee key issues they should explore with Judge Garland, as it has done with past nominees.

ADL is the world’s leading anti-hate organization. Founded in 1913 in response to an escalating climate of anti-Semitism and bigotry, its timeless mission is to protect the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment for all. Today, ADL continues to fight all forms of hate with the same vigor and passion. A global leader in exposing extremism, delivering anti-bias education, and fighting hate online, ADL is the first call when acts of anti-Semitism occur. ADL’s ultimate goal is a world in which no group or individual suffers from bias, discrimination or hate.
