ADL to Saudi-Owned TV Network: Don’t Use Hitler to Promote Viewership

Update (9/23/13): According to an article published on the Arabian Business website, a spokesperson for MBC said that the ad has been removed.

New York, NY, September 17, 2013 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is calling for the immediate removal of “offensive and outrageous” promotional messages on a Saudi-owned satellite television network that show the infamous Nazi dictator, Adolf Hitler, singing the praises of the network’s programming for September.

“This offensive and outrageous campaign trivializes the Holocaust by turning Hitler into a cartoonish poster child,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director.  “Perhaps someone thought all of this was funny, but one wonders how it will play across the Arab World, where there is scant education about the murder of six million Jews and millions of others by Hitler and the Nazis and where Holocaust denial and anti-Semitism are rampant.  Why would a Saudi media outlet want to associate itself with one of history’s most demonic mass murderers?”

The ad campaign for MBC Action, which is based in Dubai, features clips from the 2009 Quentin Tarantino film “Inglourious Basterds,” where the Nazi dictator is shown speaking in a room to other Nazi officials.

Arabic subtitles inserted under the images focus on the television network’s new programming in September.  Hitler is made to say, “Look at the achievements of MBC Action.  They will control the entire region.  They are preparing for a campaign called ‘September to Remember.’”

ADL is urging the network to immediately remove the campaign from circulation.
