ADL Urges Argentina to Pursue Justice as Fifth Anniversary of Bombing Nears

New York, New York, July 14, 1999 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today called on the Government of Argentina to take immediate action to bring to justice the perpetrators of the 1994 bombing of the Jewish community building in Buenos Aires.

In a letter to President Carlos Menem, the League expressed concern "that the perpetrators of this barbarous crime are yet to be brought to justice" even as the fifth anniversary of the bombing approaches this month. The bombing killed 87 people in one of the worst acts of domestic terrorism in that nation’s history.

"Over the years we have consistently urged the Government of Argentina to do its utmost to solve the case of the community building bombing, as well as that of the 1992 bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "Despite the time that has elapsed, it is imperative that Argentina prove its resolve against terrorism. Seeking justice in these cases would demonstrate the government’s commitment to the protection and security of Argentina’s Jewish community."

The government of Argentina recently made it mandatory for the nation’s schools to teach about the tragedy. While encouraging efforts to educating children about anti-Semitism in Argentina, the League said it believes the government has not gone far enough to prove its resolve to root out terrorism and injustice aimed at Jews.

"We urge that more be done in Argentina to prove the nation’s resolve against terrorism and its commitment to the well-being of its Jewish community," said Mr. Foxman.

ADL representatives presented the letter to Argentina Consul General Guillermo McGough at a meeting today in New York City.
