ADL Welcomes Appointment of New State Department Envoy on Anti-Semitism

New York, NY, May 20, 2013 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today welcomed Secretary of State John Kerry’s appointment of Ira Forman to serve as the State Department’s Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism.

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

The appointment of Mr. Forman by the White House demonstrates that America’s resolve to fight anti-Semitism is serious and ongoing. The Special Envoy has been an important factor in helping to institutionalize that fight as an American foreign policy priority.

Secretary Kerry has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the fight against anti-Semitism and bigotry. We have no doubt that with the Secretary’s support Mr. Forman will play an important role in ensuring that the significant political will and diplomatic resources of the U.S. are brought to bear to urge foreign governments to take action.

Since the creation of the Special Envoy position, State Department reporting on anti-Semitic incidents and trends around the world has continued to grow and it has elevated awareness and engagement by America’s diplomats around the world. We are grateful to Ambassador Michael Kozak, who has served the cause honorably as the Interim Special Envoy, and we look forward to working with Mr. Forman as he crafts his ideas for how to ensure that the positive trajectory will continue.

The position of Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism was established by the Global Anti-Semitism Review Act of 2004, sponsored by the late Rep. Tom Lantos (D-CA), Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Sen. George Voinovich (R-OH) in order to enhance State Department monitoring of and action against anti-Semitism.

ADL is the world’s leading anti-hate organization. Founded in 1913 in response to an escalating climate of anti-Semitism and bigotry, its timeless mission is to protect the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment for all. Today, ADL continues to fight all forms of hate with the same vigor and passion. A global leader in exposing extremism, delivering anti-bias education, and fighting hate online, ADL is the first call when acts of anti-Semitism occur. ADL’s ultimate goal is a world in which no group or individual suffers from bias, discrimination or hate.
