ADL Welcomes Election of Reuven Rivlin as Next President of Israel

Praises Peres for His “Unparalleled Service”

New York, NY, June 10, 2014 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today congratulated Reuven Rivlin on his election to serve as the next president of the State of Israel, and thanked outgoing President Shimon Peres for his decades of unparalleled service to Israel and on behalf of the Jewish people.

Mr. Rivlin will be sworn in as Israel’s next president in late July. President Peres will step down after seven years in office.

Barry Curtiss-Lusher, ADL National Chair, and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

We congratulate Reuven Rivlin on being elected to serve as Israel’s next president. President-elect Rivlin’s long and accomplished career in service to the Israeli people, including his numerous years as a Member of Knesset, government minister and Knesset Speaker, have undoubtedly prepared him for this important and distinguished role. We are confident that the State of Israel will benefit greatly from the leadership and expertise President-elect Rivlin will bring to the presidency.

We express our heartfelt appreciation to outgoing President Shimon Peres for his great success as Israeli president, and thank him for his long distinguished and remarkable career in service to Israel and on behalf of the Jewish people. President Peres has uniquely served in nearly every official Israeli government capacity, and remains the last of Israel’s great leaders from the founding generation of the Jewish State.

President Peres’s tireless efforts on behalf of the security and prosperity of Israel are unparalleled. He is widely revered and beloved by leaders and individuals across the world, and although he is retiring, his clarion voice, wisdom and statesmanship will undoubtedly continue to be heard. We wish him good health and much success in all his future endeavors.
