ADL Welcomes President Obama’s Nomination Of Sen. John Kerry For Secretary Of State

New York, NY, December 21, 2012...The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today welcomed President Obama’s nomination of Senator John Kerry (D-MA) to serve as Secretary of State, calling him “a champion for civil and human rights” and an “effective advocate for Israel’s security in a dangerous region.”

Barry Curtiss-Lusher, ADL National Chair, and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

Senator Kerry has been a consummate statesmen and a strong advocate of America’s engagement in the world. As chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he has been a staunch defender of democracy and freedom and a vital voice on issues which are important to ADL.

Throughout his Senate career, Mr. Kerry has consistently been an effective advocate for Israel’s security in a dangerous region and demonstrated his commitment to fighting against anti-Semitism and bigotry all over the world. He has traveled to Israel many times, and his first visit to Israel was as part of an ADL Congressional Mission in May 1986. He is a staunch champion of the cause of civil rights and human dignity, and was an outstandingly powerful leader in the Jewish people’s struggle to free Soviet Jewry.

He has been an advocate and defender of the president’s policy to prevent a nuclear Iran, telling the Democratic National Convention this summer: “Barack Obama promised always to stand with Israel to tighten sanctions on Iran -- and take nothing off the table.”

Senator Kerry has been a soldier during wartime and a soldier in the fight against discrimination. He has led efforts to make America a stronger, fairer country for all of its citizens. These outstanding qualities will serve him and our country well in the role of America’s top diplomat.

ADL is the world’s leading anti-hate organization. Founded in 1913 in response to an escalating climate of anti-Semitism and bigotry, its timeless mission is to protect the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment for all. Today, ADL continues to fight all forms of hate with the same vigor and passion. A global leader in exposing extremism, delivering anti-bias education, and fighting hate online, ADL is the first call when acts of anti-Semitism occur. ADL’s ultimate goal is a world in which no group or individual suffers from bias, discrimination or hate.
