Letter to UK Prime Minister Cameron on Speech Against Islamic Extremism

July 20, 2015

The Rt Hon David Cameron MP
Prime Minister
United Kingdom

Dear Mr. Prime Minister:

Please accept our congratulations on your thoughtful and forceful speech yesterday against Islamic extremism.

Many speeches about anti-Semitism have referred to the major role of Islamic extremism. In that, there is much commendable, but little remarkable.  Your speech about Islamic extremism, however, stands out for assigning a central role to anti-Semitism among Islamic extremism’s malignant and illiberal characteristics.  The Anti-Defamation League has been promoting this analysis for many years, and we are delighted to hear that message from a platform as eminent as the British Prime Ministership and from a leader as highly and widely respected as you.

Beyond the anti-Semitism aspect, we appreciated your forthright calls for counter-speech to challenge extremist narratives, for greater efforts to combat online extremism, to differentiate between respect for diversity and tolerance of anathema practices, and for moderate Islamic leaders to play a more visible role.  The ADL has been encouraging all of these actions in our proposed policies to combat Islamic extremism.

Please be assured of our support as you develop and implement your Counter-Extremism Strategy.
