Members of the New Black Panther Party, the largest organized anti-Semitic black militant group in America, made racist and anti-Semitic remarks during a confrontation with the media on August 8, 2006.
Steve Muhammad, one of former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney's security staff, scuffled with the media at McKinney's campaign headquarters after being accidentally struck by a news camera, according to reports and video coverage. Several other members of the security entourage, who wore patches on their clothes that read: "New Black Panther Party - Freedom or Death," were present at McKinney's campaign headquarters as well. New Black Panther Party Chief of Staff Hashim Nzinga said that his group volunteered to protect McKinney.
During the scuffle, a member of the entourage wearing a New Black Panther Party pin shouted expletives at the media, including calling them "crackers" and saying, "You got what you damn wanted. You got your Uncle Tom, now go put your cameras on him," referring to Hank Johnson, an African American candidate who defeated McKinney. "You ain't in Israel and this ain't no Lebanese people, so back up," he continued. "Gonna get your Jewish [expletive]… (inaudible)…."
Following McKinney's concession speech, a reporter asked the former Congresswoman why she thought she lost. A member of her entourage interrupted, "Why do you think she lost? You wanna know what led to the loss? Israel. The Zionists. You. Put on your yarmulke and celebrate."
Anti-Semitic and racist rhetoric has been part of the New Black Panther Party's message since its founding in 1990. The group's current leadership, most notably its National Chairman, Malik Zulu Shabazz, has a long record of anti-Semitic remarks.
During the group's national summit in Philadelphia in mid-August 2006, Divine Allah, the party's national youth minister, responded to accusations of being a hate group by saying, "The devil is not supposed to love God. Anti-Defamation League, and all the other so-called Jews just like them, and other white folks, the devil is not supposed to like God. The devil never liked the work of God. And that's all we have to say about that. We don't have to get so far into that. To hell with them."
