New York, NY November 5, 2015 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today urged the Senate Banking Committee to confirm, without delay, a key leader of U.S. efforts to counter terrorism and the states that sponsor it. Adam Szubin, Acting Undersecretary of Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, leads the enforcement of sanctions against terrorists, weapons proliferators, human rights violators and rogue nations like Iran.
Jonathan A. Greenblatt, ADL CEO, issued the following statement:
There is no doubt that America’s frontline enforcement efforts require the kind of experience and rigor that Adam Szubin has demonstrated. His leadership has made the Treasury Finance Intelligence effort one of the most potent and effective tools against the funding of terror and the isolation of rogue regimes.
The Treasury Department effort to deny terrorists and rogue regimes the funds for their murderous activity has been one of the most effective tools in the U.S. counterterrorism arsenal. Especially as all eyes are on how Iran complies with the recently reached nuclear agreement, blocking the confirmation of this watchdog would be counterproductive and send just the wrong signal. The Senate should send a clear message to the world that there is unflinching bipartisan support for enforcing U.S. sanctions against Iran. This will be important in the case of a violation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and the potential need for snapback to re-impose sanctions.
We urge the Senate Banking Committee to confirm Mr. Szubin without delay.
