ADL Hails House Passage of Dream and Promise Act; Calls on Senate to Take Action

New York, NY, June 5, 2019…ADL (the Anti-Defamation League) hailed the U.S. House of Representatives’ historic passage of legislation that would provide more than 2 million undocumented immigrants a pathway to permanent protections and citizenship, including young Dreamers and recipients of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED).

The Dream and Promise Act, H.R. 6, passed yesterday in the House by a vote of 237-187 and is the first standalone bill granting a permanent pathway to citizenship for immigrants to pass Congress since 2010.

Jonathan A. Greenblatt, ADL CEO and National Director, issued the following statement:

We commend the House for this significant milestone in moving forward legislation that would finally protect young Dreamers, TPS and DED recipients. The Trump Administration’s revocation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program for young immigrants and temporary or deferred status for those who have fled disasters or wars in their home countries has torn apart families and left lives in limbo. The status of these immigrants, who have contributed so much to our communities, has been uncertain for far too long.

This Act’s passage is a strong reminder of the support for protecting families and fully restoring order and fairness to our immigration system. We will also continue to work with partners in the immigration community and Congress on language to ensure the protection of communities of color. We strongly urge the Senate to take up and pass protections for Dreamers, TPS and DED holders immediately.

As this administration continues to demonize and attack immigrants, the House has set an important example and a hopeful vision for the future.
