ADL Statement on Appointment of Ken Cuccinelli as Acting Director of USCIS

New York, NY, June 13, 2019 ... ADL (the Anti-Defamation League) today issued the following statement regarding the President's appointment of former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli as Acting Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS):

"The appointment of Ken Cuccinelli as Acting Director of USCIS is deeply troubling. Cuccinelli has a long history of engaging in and promoting anti-immigrant and anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and policies. One would think this record would immediately disqualify him for this position.

"As a Virginia State Senator, Cuccinelli sponsored bills to allow employees to be fired and deny unemployment benefits to employees who do not speak English. He also led an attempt to repeal birthright citizenship. Cuccinelli has compared immigrants to pests and, while Attorney General of Virginia, filed an amicus brief supporting Arizona’s notorious anti-immigrant “show me your papers” law. Cuccinelli also has a long history of anti-LGBTQ stances, criticizing the Supreme Court’s marriage equality decision and campaigning for the criminalization of sodomy.

"In addition to this long and troubling record of bigoted rhetoric and advocacy, Cuccinelli has not demonstrated the commitment to the integrity of our immigration system necessary for someone whose responsibilities include understanding immigrant needs and fairly adjudicating a wide range of requests for immigration benefits.”
