ADL Welcomes Apology From San Francisco 49ers Running Back Jarryd Hayne

New York, NY, July 15, 2015 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) welcomed today’s apology from San Francisco 49ers running back Jarryd Hayne for remarks he made via Twitter espousing the anti-Semitic myth that Jews killed Jesus.

Hayne, who is an ex-rugby star from Australia, noted in his apology that he has understood how his words “were hurtful to the Jewish community and this was not my intention” and subsequently removed the tweets after learning they were “incorrect.”

“We are glad that Jarryd Hayne now understands the horrific anti-Semitic history behind his post and why it was so insensitive and inappropriate,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. “We are also heartened that in his apology he called on his fans to ‘accept people of all faiths,’ and hope he continues to educate himself about the evils of anti-Semitism and bigotry.

“This is a teachable moment,” Mr. Foxman added. “I have always believed that individuals have the ability to change their hearts and minds, and it is reassuring that Mr. Hayne took full responsibility for his remarks.”
