New York, NY, May 4, 2023 … ADL (Anti-Defamation League) today welcomed the convictions of former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio and three other leaders on multiple charges, including seditious conspiracy, for their role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
“These convictions highlight the Proud Boys’ key role in the attack on the Capitol and send a clear message to members of the group who continue to threaten, disrupt and intimidate local communities that violent extremism will not be tolerated,” ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said. “While these convictions are an important step towards protecting our institutions from extremism, the recent activities of the Proud Boys pose a new challenge for safeguarding our local communities against the same threats.”
Throughout the seditious conspiracy trial, Proud Boys chapters across the U.S. continued to engage in disruptive activities, particularly targeting the LGBTQ+ community with alarming frequency. These threats and in-person demonstrations have caused the disruption, cancellation or postponement of many events, including story hours.
The Proud Boys are a right-wing extremist group with a violent agenda. They are primarily misogynistic, Islamophobic, transphobic and anti-immigration. Some members espouse white supremacist and antisemitic ideologies and/or engage with white supremacist groups.
Proud Boys members accounted for one of the highest number of extremist arrestees in relation to the Jan 6 insurrection.
The individuals convicted today are also defendants in a civil lawsuit on behalf of the District of Columbia, in which ADL is serving as co-counsel.
