Religious Freedom

ADL safeguards religious freedom for all Americans by preserving the clear separation of church and state. Since the U.S. Supreme Court invoked Jefferson’s phrase in 1947, in deciding Everson v. Board of Education, ADL has filed an amicus brief in almost every religious freedom case. Read them in our amicus briefs database. We have also advocated tirelessly in Congress for better protections, such as the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993.

ADL further promotes religious freedom through our Interfaith & Intergroup Relations work, promoting understanding among diverse religious groups, and through our Interfaith Coalition on Mosques, which works to ensure that Muslims can exercise the same religious freedom enjoyed by everyone in America.
