There is a wide range of views regarding Israeli policies and actions, and the vigorous debate and activism on these complex issues are important forms of public discourse. While criticism of Israeli policies and actions is not inherently problematic, certain forms of anti-Israel rhetoric and activism engage in distortions and delegitimize Israel and its existence, demonize Zionism - the movement for Jewish self-determination and statehood - or at times even utilize antisemitic assertions or tropes in their criticism. ADL has seen firsthand that extreme rhetoric, demonizing activism and ugly expressions of anti-Zionism frequently results in antisemitism and discrimination against Jews in different environments, including campuses or workplaces, in the US and around the world.
ADL is troubled how many anti-Israel campaigns, such as the BDS (boycott, divestment, sanctions) movement provide simplistic, unfair and unconstructive answers to the complex Israeli-Palestinian conflict, while giving no importance to the advancement of Israeli-Palestinian dialogue, reconciliation and peace.
ADL responds to radical anti-Israel activism and campaigns through advocacy, education and engagement.
We educate on how some expressions that are critical of Israel and Zionism can be antisemitic and can leave Jews – the overwhelming majority of whom consider a connection with Israel as part of their Jewish identity – feeling besieged and isolated.
We serve as a go-to resource of education and programs for stakeholders who confront such extreme anti-Israel campaigns, some that engage in antisemitism, and have harmful effects on communities and campuses.
