2017 Impact Report
In this report:
Fighting the Good Fight in a Pivotal Year
The wave of anti-Semitism and hate unleashed during 2016 intensified as we moved into 2017, threatening the civil rights of millions and empowering the voices of hate.
The scope of these threats drove ADL to fight back on more fronts than ever before. Whether the hate manifested on campus, online, in the media or overseas, ADL was there, leveraging a century of experience and a growing arsenal of tools to fight for a more just and civil society.
This would not have been possible without the coalition partners, advocates and supporters that donate their time, energy and financial resources to join ADL in its mission. Thank you.

ADL Nationally and Globally
Bigotry and hate don’t recognize borders. So ADL works across the country and around the world, fighting the good fight for justice and fairness. The scene that shook the nation in Charlottesville during August of 2017 epitomizes just how pivotal the work of ADL is. When hate groups converged in unprecedented numbers for the 'Unite the Right' rally, ADL stood up and called out the hate that harms us all.
Americans were shocked to see hundreds of khaki-clad white supremacists shouting anti-Semitic slogans at the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville. For ADL, Charlottesville came as no surprise. We knew who these hate groups were. We knew what to expect from them. And we mobilized effective and lasting responses to the year’s most striking displays of hate.

As our society increasingly moves online, our work has moved online as well. ADL is combining a century of experience with the power of advanced technology to pursue our mission in the digital space. The opening of our Center for Technology and Society in 2017 marked a significant milestone for accelerating ADL’s online work.
As the Internet evolved over the past few decades, so did the tactics of those who use it to spread anti-Semitism and hate. ADL was among the first organizations to call out the problem of cyber-hate, and we’ve worked closely with the tech community to help combat it. ADL’s CTS marks an ambitious step forward in the fight to keep the internet safe.

ADL Across Communities
While the scope of ADL’s work is global, nowhere is the impact of this work clearer than in the personal stories of the individuals and communities that have been victimized by hate. In 2017, ADL expanded established programs and introduced new initiatives to reach more people fighting the good fight across more communities than ever before. The Good Fight: America’s Ongoing Struggle for Justice, made possible by Eric and Linda Horodas, presents some of the most inspirational stories of the past century and reminds us to remain vigilant in the struggle for justice.
The past century of American history is filled with examples of groups that struggled mightily to earn their freedom and equality in the face of oppression and bigotry. The journeys of nine such groups are featured in The Good Fight, which brings these stories to life through evocative personal essays and photographs. ADL was proud to sponsor The Good Fight and we’re even prouder that woven throughout all of the history of struggles and successes is the story of how ADL was front and center in the fight to secure fair treatment to all.
