In February 2025, the Department of Education launched an investigation into alleged antisemitic discrimination at Portland State University. These matters were opened using the Department's power to launch investigations.

In March 2025, Portland State University was one of the 60 schools that received a letter from the Department of Education accusing them of violating Title VI.

What’s Happening on Campus?

In April 2024, an encampment was established on campus by anti-Israel protestors. In May 2024, following administrator calls for the encampment to disperse, an unknown number of students and external protesters barricaded themselves inside the University's campus library. This multi-day occupation was in protest against the University's association with Boeing, due to the company's reported ties to the Israeli military. The protesters' actions resulted in approximately $1.23 million in damages to the library and led to numerous arrests.

University Policies and Responsive Action

In January 2024, the university established the Task Force on Building Community Through Dialogue and Fighting Antisemitism, anti-Palestinian, and anti-Arab Bias. The Task Force produced a report with recommendations in July 2024. Additionally, in May 2024, PSU announced the establishment of a Committee on Socially Responsible Investment and Partnership. This committee is tasked with reviewing the University's investment and partnership practices.

In 2025, the Office of the President convened an Antisemitism Staff Work Group to develop further recommendations to contribute to a safe and welcoming campus environment for Jewish students. Additionally, a grassroots Ad Hoc Working Group to Combat Antisemitism has been meeting since before 2021.

In June 2025, two senior administrators completed the Brandeis University President’s Initiative on Antisemitism. Additionally, PSU offers a free, one-credit course on Antisemitism through the Judaic Studies Department, which 115 students completed in Spring 2025.
