Modern technology has provided groundbreaking advantages, opportunities and information and cannot be underestimated. The Internet, video and music sharing sites, social media and mobile phones have quite literally changed our world forever. Sadly, this ubiquitous communications technology also has become a place for people to communicate and spread hate, vitriolic language and bigotry.

“Cyberhate” has become a growing concern due to its impact on individuals, online communities and our society as a whole. Many online companies are working to strike a balance between protecting individual expression and ensuring that online communities are safe and welcoming for all people.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to define and learn more about cyberhate, reflect on their own experiences with cyberhate and explore the role of counterspeech in being an online ally. (English and Spanish)
