Understanding Coded Hate
Hate does not always announce itself outright. It often hides behind coded numbers, borrowed symbols, memes and slogans designed to look harmless to outsiders while signaling hateful ideologies to insiders. Many extreme or fringe movements use such tactics to varying degrees. For example, hate related symbols and phrases are a prominent part of the white supremacist movement. Other coded flags and chants come from the antizionist movement including some that emerged after Hamas's October 7, 2023, terror attack on Israel. ADL has also documented new terms, images and phrases used in online communities that glorify mass violence and extremist killings.
