ADL 2017 Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents: A Sampling of Campus Incidents

Anti-Semitism continues to be a serious concern on college campuses and in public, private and parochial grade schools. Below is a sampling of incidents from ADL's Annual Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents:

Nationwide:

  • University of Minnesota – Twin Cities (February): White supremacist fliers posted on campus. Messages included: "White Man, are you sick and tired of the Jews destroying your country through mass immigration and degeneracy? Join us in the struggle for global white supremacy."
  • Drake University (February): Anti-Semitic slur carved into chair at university.
  • Rutgers University, New Brunswick (February): Swastika drawn on a whiteboard in a residence hall.
  • University of California, San Diego (March): A swastika and the phrase: “Heil Trump” were written in a campus restroom.
  • Drake University (March): Jewish student target of anti-Semitic verbal harassment.
  • Virginia Tech (March): Swastika leaflets strewn on lawn of campus Chabad.
  • Wesleyan University (April): Flyers found on campus that included anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant, and racist rhetoric.
  • Princeton University (April): Racist posters found at four location around Princeton University including the Center for Jewish Life.
  • California State University, Long Beach (April): Anti-Semitic flyers attributed to white supremacist group posted around campus.
  • University of California, Santa Cruz (May): UCSC Hillel Israeli Independence Day event was disrupted by members of the Afrikan Black Student Alliance who tore down an Israeli flag and yelled: “F-ck Jewish Slugs” and “free Palestine.”
  • Weber State University (August): White nationalist posters containing racist and anti-Semitic content discovered on campus.
  • Georgia Tech (August): Swastika drawn with chalk on pavement.
  • University of Mary Washington (August): A student discovered a swastika drawn on one of the doors in an elevator in a campus residence hall.
  • Virginia Commonwealth University (September): Vanguard America and the Attomwaffen Division posted anti-Semitic, new-Nazi flyers around campus.
  • Georgetown University (September): Swastika vandalism within two days of each other discovered in campus residence halls.
  • Bentley University (September): A Jewish student discovered a swastika drawn on his dorm room door.
  • Colorado State University in Ft. Collins (September): “Heil Hitler” was written on a Jewish student’s white board outside her dorm room.
  • University of Illinois, Champagne-Urbana (September): The words “I hate Jews” were written into a bathroom door on campus.

New York State:

 

ADL 2017 Audit: New York Numbers

 

Anti-Semitic incidents across New York State nearly doubled in the first nine months of 2017, with troubling increases in the number of cases of vandalism and harassment, including on campus:

  • New York University (January): “Jews are a virus” written in black marker on trash recycling bin.

  • Manhattanville College (March): Swastika drawn on message board on dorm room door.

  • SUNY Plattsburgh (April): Anti-Semitic and racist flyers posted around campus on Holocaust Remembrance Day.
  • SUNY Cortland (February): Racist and anti-Semitic graffiti discovered in academic building bathroom.
  • Fordham University (February): Swastika graffiti in campus bathroom.
  • Binghamton University (March): Jewish student discovered drawing of a swastika in a library bathroom.
  • Columbia University (April): A book in the university library was defaced with text that read: “The ovens were too small! Heil!”
  • CUNY Brooklyn (May): Graffiti reading: “9/11 was Jewish lightning,” “Throw the Jew down the well,” and “Grab him by the horn and our planet will be free” found in campus bathroom.
  • Fordham University (August): Swastika discovered in residence hall bathroom.
  • Columbia University (September): A swastika and the letters “WP,” meaning “white power,” were written in black marker on a stairwell.
  • Fordham University (September): Swastika carved into residence hall bathroom stall.
