Student Killer Expressed Appreciation of Hitler on Neo-Nazi Site

  • March 23, 2005

The high school student who killed nine people before taking his own life on an Indian reservation in Minnesota posted comments expressing admiration for Hitler last year on an online neo-Nazi Web forum called, "The Libertarian Nationalist Socialist Green Party."

The Libertarian Nationalist Socialist Green Party (LNSG) Web site provides a platform for anti-Semitism, racism and hate, and its forum enables likeminded sympathizers to share their worldview with others.

The site, whose home page boasts a green Nazi flag, promotes itself as an alternative to other white supremacist sites and is dedicated to discussions of a so-called "Nationalist" philosophy while opposing "globalism and internationalism" and promoting environmental protection.

The LNSG is solely Internet-based and does not have the trappings of more traditional neo-Nazi groups who, in addition to operating Web sites, have a membership base, mailing lists and local "chapters." LNSG has no known political activities and its only real presence is in cyberspace. It is unknown who actually runs the site, although Steve Martinez is identified as a contact.

Anti-Semitism and opposition to "race mixing" are central to the ideology espoused by LNSG on its Web site. In a section called "Frequently Asked Questions," the site's creators state that "anti-Judaism" is a core tenet of their ideology: "Jews are a fanatical religious-ethnic group with beliefs that translate to poor values in Indo-European societies. … We want Judaism out of our lands, and Jews – like any other foreign race – sent back to their home continent."

While the LNSG claims not to explicitly condone racism, the site advocates racial separatism and offers direct links to sites run by more traditional white supremacist groups in the U.S., including the virulently anti-Semitic and racist National Alliance, the Creativity Movement (formerly World Church of the Creator) and others.

In response to the Red Lake shootings, the LNSG site posted a statement blaming modern society for the killings. The statement by Steve Martinez says that "such events are to be expected when thinking people are crammed into an unthinking, irrational modern society."

Student Praised Hitler

Immediately following the March 21 school shootings on the Red Lake reservation, the neo-Nazi site revealed that Jeff Weise, the 15-year-old student who acted as a lone gunman, was a frequent visitor who posted as many as 34 messages last year expressing admiration for Hitler and frustration at the lack of racial purity in his community.

Weise posted messages between March and August 2004 using the screen names "NativeNazi" and "Todesengel" (German for "angel of death").

Excerpts include:

  • July 19, 2004: "Most of the Natives I know have been poisoned by what they were taught in school. The basic 'Nazi = Bad, Jew = Good. Defend Jew at all costs.' You get the idea, the public school system has done more harm then good, and as a result it has left many on this reservation misled and misinformed."
  • July 13, 2004: "It's hard though, being a Native American National Socialist, people are so misinformed, ignorant, and close-minded it makes your life a living hell."
  • April 19, 2004: Weise writes that he is being blamed for threats made to his school. "…someone said they were going to shoot up the school on 4/20, Hitler's birthday, and just because I claim being a National Socialist, guess whom they've pinned?"
  • March 19, 2004: "Todesengel" writes that he "always carried a natural admiration for Hitler and his ideals, and his courage to take on larger nations."
