New York, NY, May 16, 2019 ... ADL (the Anti-Defamation League) strongly condemned the White House immigration plan annouced today. As outlined, the administration’s plan attempts to abandon the current family-based immigration system in favor of a “merit-based” immigration system, denigrating entire groups of people and violating the very essence of our nation’s core values of diversity, inclusion and acceptance.
Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL CEO and National Director stated:
America is built on generations of immigrants, those seeking a better life and often coming into this country alone, only to bring over their families later. The plan outlined by the administration brings to mind a time where bigotry and racism led to quotas and scapegoating of immigrants regarded as undesirable or threats to Americans, and is a cynical attempt to inject racism, bigotry, and xenophobia back into immigration policy-making. The president seems determined, by any means necessary, to turn his back on people fleeing their lives or seeking new opportunity in America.
This new immigration plan represents only the latest attempt to separate families, restrict legal immigration, and undermine our nation’s highest values. The fact that this administration could not find space in this plan for millions of Dreamers, who have grown up as Americans and whose plight is a consistent area of bipartisan agreement, suggests that this is not a serious effort to address the real challenges in our immigration system. We strongly urge Congress to reject this plan and instead enact policies—like the Dream and Promise Act and the NO BAN Act—that protect young immigrants, families, and their future generations from deportation and fear.
