ADL’s Task Force on Middle East Minorities Statement on the Terrorist Attack on a Church in Karak, Jordan

New York, NY, October 23, 2026 ... The ADL (Anti-Defamation League) Task Force on Middle East Minorities issued the following statement regarding today’s terrorist attack on a church in the Kingdom of Jordan:

We are horrified by the terrorist attack at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in the village of Hmoud, where gunmen opened fire on Christian mourners gathered for a funeral, killing and wounding many. We mourn the victims, pray for the recovery of the wounded, and stand with their families, with the Jordanian Christian community, with Christians around the world, and with all Jordanians.

A house of worship must remain a sanctuary. This act of pure hatred is a stark reminder of the threat that violent extremism poses to religious minorities in the Middle East and beyond.

We welcome the swift response of the Jordanian authorities under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II. Those responsible, and anyone who aided or incited them, should be brought to justice. The safeguarding of places of worship is of the utmost importance.

“To attack Christians gathered to mourn is an assault on human dignity and the right to live one’s faith without fear. Our hearts are with the families whose grief has been compounded by this violence. Christians, just like any other religious minority, belong in Jordan and across the Middle East as equal citizens, with every right to worship openly and build a future in their homeland. We must stand together against those who would use terror to take that future away,” said George Selim and Nadine Maenza, Co-Chairs of ADL’s Task Force on Middle East Minorities.

ADL’s Task Force on Middle East Minorities stands in solidarity with the people of the Kingdom of Jordan, united in grief, and will continue working to ensure that all communities, in the region and beyond, can practice their faith in safety and dignity.
