Litigation & Investigations

In January 2024, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights opened a Title VI investigation into ASU’s handling of antisemitic incidents. In March 2025, ASU was one of the 60 schools that received a letter from the Department of Education accusing them of violating Title VI.

What’s Happening on Campus?

A resolution calling for an academic boycott of Israel and a boycott of companies that do business with Israel passed the Graduate and Professional Student Association in February 2024.

In August 2024, an individual displayed a sign that featured a bloody Israeli flag and the caption “Jews killed Jesus."

In April 2025, a mezuzah on a Jewish student's door was forcibly removed.

University Policies and Responsive Action

Following October 7, ASU's Police Department provided additional security, safety consultations, and escorts to Hillel and Chabad.

In February 2024, ASU suspended a student organization that posted “Death to the Zionist” on social media.

On the first day of an unauthorized encampment in April 2024, the University issued numerous warnings before clearing the encampment and arresting dozens of individuals, most of whom were not students. To keep the campus community informed, the University issued a statement outlining exactly which policies had been violated and what steps would be taken to ensure there would be consequences for students who had been arrested.

Ahead of the 2024-25 academic year, ASU published ‘Free Speech at ASU,’ a resource that outlines the conduct permitted during demonstrations on campus and the time, place, and manner guidelines for when and how protests can take place on campus. These include the prohibition of unauthorized structures and tents, limiting protests to daytime hours and underscoring that protestors must always follow the instructions of University officials if they are asked to relocate or cease protest activities. University faculty and staff have formed a Jewish Faculty and Staff Association.

ASU also has a standing administrative effort to address antisemitism through the Office of Inclusive Excellence, through which the Jewish Faculty and Staff Association provides observations and recommendations for addressing antisemitism on campus. Simultaneously, the Committee for Campus Inclusion and the Council of Religious Advisors both focus on fostering a positive campus climate and supporting Jewish members and all members of the campus community.

The University also offers a number of educational opportunities, including via their To Be Welcoming, Welcoming Dialogue on Nationality Bias and the Welcoming Dialogue on Religious Bias trainings, which provide definitions, examples, analysis, reflection, and information about the impact of antisemitism. Furthermore, the University strives to foster civil discourse on campus through its Civic Discourse Project, the Center for American Civics, the Professional Educator Learning Hub, and the Institute of Politics’ PRO/CONversations series.

In April 2025, ADL’s ‘Rising Above Together’ Summit on Antisemitism in Tempe, Arizona was hosted by Arizona State University. The 2nd annual “Rising Above Together” in partnership with ASU was held on February 27th, 2026.
