What’s Happening on Campus?

In April 2024, during an anti-Israel demonstration, a flag of Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PLFP), a designated terrorist organization, was displayed by protestors. A number of students also walked out in protest as Jewish-American comedian Jerry Seinfeld spoke during a commencement ceremony in May 2024.

University Policies and Responsive Action

Since October 7, 2023, the University has made increased security available for Jewish spaces on campus, and the Middle East Studies Department has hosted various events related to Israel and Jewish life. The Duke student government has endorsed the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism.

Throughout the 2024-25 academic year, Duke University hosted a series of in-person Antisemitism 101 Trainings for Duke Faculty & Staff. A September 2024 Provost’s forum focused on the role of universities in discussing and engaging with the reactions on college campuses following the Oct. 7 attacks and the Israel-Hamas War.

Following a November 2024 request for the University to divest, submitted by the Duke Divest Coalition (DDC) to Duke’s Advisory Committee on Investment Responsibility (ACIR), ACIR concluded that it should not ask the President and Board of Trustees to consider divesting from companies with ties to Israel.

For the 2025-26 academic year, Jewish Life at Duke is offering various cohort-based learning seminars including Jewish Learning Fellowship (JLF): Life's Big Questions; Jewish Learning Fellowship (JLF): KOL YISRAEL: ETHNIC DIVERSITY; and a Dialogue Across Difference program.
