In September 2024, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights entered into a resolution agreement with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, outlining a series of actions the University must take to address antisemitism on campus.
What’s Happening on Campus?
In April 2024, during a political club meeting, students stated that, "The university and United States should stop supporting Israel. Jews were greedy for always pandering to the United States for economic support." That same month, an anti-Israel encampment was established on campus.
In September 2024, the campus SJP reposted a photo from an official University Instagram account showing a Jewish student at their urban planning internship in Israel and commented: "You get to spend your summer learning how to ethnically cleanse Palestinians and receive a standing ovation."
In February 2025, the UIUC Campus Student Election Commission passed a referendum calling for the University to divest from certain companies affiliated with Israel.
In September 2025, fliers were posted on campus that read: "Come support ethnic cleansing with Chabad!! Am yisrael chai!! Welcome war criminals with open arms at Chabad!!" That same month, during a Chabad event, an individual sent pepperoni pizzas to the Chabad house.
On the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, Jewish student groups held a remembrance event honoring the victims of the attack, while the campus SJP chapter led an evening protest urging the University to divest from military companies..
University Policies and Responsive Action
Over the last few years, the University has partnered with Chabad, Hillel International, and the Simon Wiesenthal Center to develop approaches to combating antisemitism and supporting Jewish life on campus. These have included participating in Hillel’s Campus Climate Initiative and leadership attending events such as Shabbat dinners and Hanukkah services. UIUC has also engaged external organizations to provide incident response and education about hate speech and free speech.
In August 2024, UIUC terminated SJP’s registered student organization status in response to SJP’s violations of University rules during the Spring 2024 encampment.
During the 2025–26 academic year, the Title VI Office has continued to expand the delivery of in-person trainings to administrators and staff. Furthermore, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Access, Civil Rights & Community has hired external consultants to develop online training modules on antisemitism and Islamophobia. These educational modules are to be provided to all current students, staff, and faculty in the Spring 2026 term.
This year, the University of Illinois System has also been working with an external consultant to discuss strategies to navigate campus conversation, focused on antisemitism. One of the initiatives that the University is participating in as a campus is the College Presidents for Civic Preparedness project. The goal of this initiative is to support campus leadership in preparing students for active engagement and leadership by providing them with regular opportunities to navigate difficult conversations on sensitive issues.
