What’s Happening on Campus?

In February 2024, anti-Israel protesters disrupted a presentation by October 7 Hamas massacre survivor Gal Cohen-Solal, leading to police removing the protesters from the premises.

In May 2024, the campus SJP chapter established a protest encampment in front of Fraser Hall. In October 2024, three "Free Palestine" posters were placed on the Hillel building at the University of Kansas over the course of three days.

Additional anti-Israel protests occurred in November 2024, with walkouts that used antisemitic and anti-Zionist chants.

In April 2025, the KU Student Senate passed a resolution denouncing Israel and its actions in the war against Hamas, titled “A Resolution to Recognize the Ongoing Genocide in Palestine.”

University Policies and Responsive Action

In October 2023, the University held an educational session titled "Antisemitism: Past and Present" to foster awareness and understanding of historical and contemporary antisemitism.

Since October 7, 2023, KU has had an informal advisory council that includes representatives from KU Hillel, KU Chabad, Jewish Federation of Kansas City, JCRB|AJC of Kansas City and many alumni and donors. Representatives from these groups meet and confer with KU leadership on a regular basis to provide relevant perspectives and advice.

In June 2025, Chancellor Girod received the Bloch Humanitarian of the Year Award from JCRB|AJC of Kansas City.

The University provides mandatory training for employees and students on anti-discrimination laws, reporting procedures, and supportive communication, aiming to build awareness and understanding. Furthermore, over the course of the past three years, the University’s Dole Institute, and several other relevant departments, have sponsored academic programs related to civil discourse.
