No Place for Hate®

No Place for Hate®

ADL's Signature School Climate Initiative

With public displays of hate on the rise, it is more important than ever for schools to commit to programs that clearly define expectations in behavior for all members of the community. Whether you are a student, educator, or family member, you have a role to play in combating bias and bullying as a means to stop the escalation of hate.

WHAT IS NO PLACE FOR HATE®?

ADL’s No Place for Hate® initiative provides K-12 schools with a proactive and student-centered framework to fight hate and build inclusive and safe communities in which respect and equity are the goals, and where all students can thrive. Schools who register for No Place for Hate® partner with ADL and implement a minimum of three school-wide activities that empower students, faculty, administration, and family members to take a stand against bias and bullying by incorporating new and existing programs under one powerful message.

STEPS TO BECOME A NO PLACE FOR HATE® SCHOOL:

  1. Register. Complete the online registration form.
  2. Form a committee. This student-led coalition is responsible for identifying bias and bullying issues at school, developing measurable goals to address these issues, and coordinating and overseeing the implementation of anti-bias and diversity activities throughout the year. Recommended training for committee members can include, but is not limited to, ADL’s anti-bias and allyship workshops.
  3. Sign the Pledge. All members of the school community will make a commitment each year by signing the No Place For Hate® Pledge.
  4. Implement three school-wide activities. Every student must have an opportunity to participate in three activities that address bias and bullying and promote diversity and inclusion through discussion, reflection, and action. Activities must follow ADL requirements and be pre-approved by ADL staff prior to implementation.
  5. Earn No Place For Hate® designation. Upon completion of requirements and submitting all documentation, schools will receive their annual No Place For Hate® banner.

Since its inception in the Nevada region in 2006, over 200 schools have participated in the program.

Our goals are to:

  • Build inclusive and safe communities in which respect is the goal, and all students can thrive.
  • Empower students, faculty, administration and family members to take a stand against hate and bullying by incorporating new and existing programs under one powerful message.
  • Engage schools and communities in at least three anti-bias activities per year, which ADL helps to develop.
  • Send a clear, unified message that all students have a place to belong.

Schools have received our no-cost program, which supports bullying prevention efforts as mandated for all schools by the CCSD Safe and Respectful Learning Environment Policy 5137 and the Washoe County School District Board Policy 9031. Students and educators alike have participated in our anti-bias trainings and learned effective strategies to combat bias and incidents of hate-motivated violence on their school campuses, thereby making schools safer.

Schools completing No Place for Hate® will be recognized publicly at our annual Walk Against Hate. Schools are entitled to free student registrations so that they are able to attend the Walk!

PLANNING FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF NO PLACE FOR HATE®

Based on the outcome of a Readiness Assessment and the analysis of existing pre-climate survey results, ADL provides a customized No Place for Hate® framework, with recommendations that address the needs and goals of the school.

ADL’s anti-bias and allyship workshops help to provide a foundation for the implementation of No Place For Hate®. Although not required, training assists educators and students in understanding and challenging bias and building ally behaviors. Provided through ADL’s A World of Difference® Institute, customized and interactive training to students, administrators, teachers, and staff equip them to foster an inclusive school climate. All training programs are interactive and utilize a variety of training modalities, including small and large group discussions, case studies, video presentations and collaborative problem-solving. Each agenda is customized to meet the specific needs of the school and informed by data gathered through assessment.

NO PLACE FOR HATE® ACTIVITIES

Taking place throughout the school year, the goal of these activities is to challenge all students to think critically, instill a sense of empathy, and empower students to act as allies for one another. Activities must focus on inclusivity and community-building, involve all students in active learning and discussion. As a student-centered framework, students are integral to the planning and implementation of each No Place For Hate® activity.

ADL staff provide Site-based No Place For Hate® Coordinators with an Orientation, as well as consultation and support throughout the school year. Coordinators also have access to ADL’s activity library.

EVALUATION and DESIGNATION

Upon completion of school wide activities a Post-Climate Survey is conducted and schools receive designation as No Place For Hate®.  Schools receive a larger banner at the end of the year to be prominently displayed and encouraged to celebrate their commitment to creating a safe and inclusive school community by organizing a banner ceremony at their school, a school board meeting, or as a collaborative community event.
