All the symbols depicted in the hate symbols database must be evaluated in the context in which they appear. Few symbols represent just one idea or are used exclusively by one group. For example, 100% is often used as an amount or an expression and it is also used by some white supremacists as shorthand for "100% white." Similarly, other symbols in this database may be significant to people who are not extreme or racist. The descriptions here point out significant multiple meanings but may not be able to relay every possible meaning of a particular symbol.
“Double Romans” refers to a two-handed salute used by some white supremacists. It involves the “doubling” of a traditional Nazi- or fascist-like salute (often referred to as a “Roman” salute) by making the gesture with both hands instead of just one. The gesture emerged among white supremacists starting in the late 2010s, used primarily as a sign of commitment to the cause, becoming more popular in the 2020s.
Even more common than employment of the gesture in the physical world is the online use of the term “Double Romans” on social media sites such as X and elsewhere. The phrase is primarily used as a term of emphasis or agreement, such as one white supremacist responding with “Double Fucking Romans!” to a post made by another white supremacist. It has also been used as part of a sign-off or signature, such as “love, respect, and double romans.” Some people who use the phrase online accompany it with an emoticon representing a two-handed Nazi salute, typically “\o/” or “o//”.
