All the symbols depicted in the hate symbols database must be evaluated in the context in which they appear. Few symbols represent just one idea or are used exclusively by one group. For example, 100% is often used as an amount or an expression and it is also used by some white supremacists as shorthand for "100% white." Similarly, other symbols in this database may be significant to people who are not extreme or racist. The descriptions here point out significant multiple meanings but may not be able to relay every possible meaning of a particular symbol.
The o-slash Hitler salute is a typographical symbol or emoticon used to abstractly depict someone giving a Nazi or fascist salute (sometimes also referred to as a “roman,” a reference to a Roman salute). The symbol, intended to depict the head and right arm of someone saluting, is formed by combining the lowercase letter “o” with the forward slash character: o/.
The o-slash salute is primarily used online, as an expression of emphasis added to a post with white supremacist sentiments, or to endorse or express agreement with posts made by others. Unlike phrases such as “Sieg Heil,” the o-slash salute, consisting solely of punctuation symbols, has the advantage for white supremacists of being largely invisible to internet searches.
Though far rarer, the symbol may be found offline as well.
One variant of this symbol is the emoticon version of the Double Romans.
