Hate Symbol

Goyim Defense League

All the symbols depicted in the hate symbols database must be evaluated in the context in which they appear. Few symbols represent just one idea or are used exclusively by one group. For example, 100% is often used as an amount or an expression and it is also used by some white supremacists as shorthand for "100% white." Similarly, other symbols in this database may be significant to people who are not extreme or racist. The descriptions here point out significant multiple meanings but may not be able to relay every possible meaning of a particular symbol.

The Goyim Defense League (GDL) is a network of virulently antisemitic propagandists who spread antisemitic content both online and offline. Online, GDL operates GoyimTV, a streaming platform dedicated to sharing antisemitic and white supremacist content through videos, livestreams and other digital formats.  Offline, GDL adherents distribute antisemitic flyers across the United States.

The GDL logo features the letters GDL rendered in a style deliberately mimicking the logo of the Anti-Defamation League, including a horizontal red bar to complete the “G,” just as the ADL logo has a blue bar completing the letter “A” in its logo.  Typically, the GDL logo is rendered using the colors red, black, and white, the colors of the Nazi flag, using a design that imitates that flag.

The logo for GoyimTV is somewhat different, featuring a tilted block letter “G” superimposed with a red “TV.” The style of the superimposed “TV” deliberately imitates the “TV” in the logo of the cable television channel MTV. Like the GDL logo, the GoyimTV logo is designed to resemble the Nazi flag. A variation of the GoyimTV logo uses its full name instead of just the letter “G.”

The group does use other styles and variations from time to time, such as rendering the letters GDL in faux-runic lettering.  It also sometimes employs slogans, such as “Goyim lives matter.”

The word “goyim” is the plural of the word “goy,” a Hebrew and Yiddish word that refers to a non-Jew. Unlike the word “gentile,” which has a similar meaning, goy and goyim are often used derogatorily.  In the 21st century, many white supremacists deliberately use the term as a self-reference, as another way to express antisemitism.
