The Legacy and Enduring Presence of White Supremacist Hate

For more than a century, ADL has exposed and combated the white supremacist movement in all its manifestations, from the Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s and Nazis of the 1930s to the alt right of the 2010s and accelerationist white supremacists of today.

White supremacists have long constituted one of the major sources of antisemitism in the United States. Motivated by their extreme ideology, white supremacists have also committed shocking acts of antisemitic violence, such as the deadly mass shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018, and violence against people of many other faiths and backgrounds.

White supremacy is a racist and antisemitic belief system whose adherents espouse one or more of the following key tenets: 1) that white people of European descent should exercise dominion over people of other backgrounds, especially where they may co-exist; 2) that whites should live by themselves in a whites-only society; 3) that white people are genetically and/or culturally superior to people of other backgrounds.

Most white supremacists further claim that the white race is in danger of extinction by rising numbers of non-whites who are controlled and manipulated by Jews. Adherents of white supremacy typically subscribe to the longstanding and dehumanizing antisemitic trope that people of Jewish faith are racial and social “parasites” who systematically exploit non-Jews for their own collective gain.

White supremacists may refer to themselves by a variety of terms, including euphemisms such as white nationalist, white separatist, racialist or race realist. The white supremacist movement is the collective term for all forms of white supremacy, from traditional white supremacists like Ku Klux Klan groups to neo-Nazis and accelerationist white supremacists. In the United States, the white supremacist movement has a long history of committing hate crimes, acts of terrorism, and harassment and intimidation.
